How to say in Japanese: Gymnasium

My impression of gymnasium, or gym ジム　(jimu) in short, is full of treadmills, cycling machines, and tonnes of weights.
But in Japan, gymnasium 体育館 (taiikukan)　is often refered as an indoor sports center where sports activities are conducted.
You see, same word, two different places, different meanings.
